Legalese and the Criminal Court: A Mock Trial Experience
by Prof. Raul Sabado, Esq.

Language neutral (English). Intermediate to Advanced.

In this seminar attendees will enhance their knowledge of legal terms and concepts frequently encountered in US courtrooms that may be particularly difficult for interpreters to grasp. Private criminal defense attorney Raul C. Sabado J.D., recipient of the Nation’s Top One Percent award by The National Association of Distinguished Counsel, will explore and unravel “Legalese,” with a strong emphasis on key legal jargon and higher order legal terms. By popular demand, an important part of the terminology will be presented in context, in a mock trial format conducted by Professor Sabado with current and former members of the nationally-recognized, award-winning Cal Poly Pomona University Mock Trial Team.

Workshop #2 (1:30 PM – 4:45 PM)
“Narco” vocabulary and Mexican legal language
by Prof. Rafael Saldívar Arreola, Ph.D. and Prof. Eleonora Lozano Bachioqui, Ph.D.

Language-specific (Spanish). Intermediate to Advanced.

In this two-part workshop, participants will examine the “Narco” phenomenon and its related terminology. Under the guidance of the presenters, the participants will be asked to analyze English equivalents for drug-related Mexican terminology. All the terms and phrases will be categorized into three topics: drugs, drug cartels and cultural phraseology. The second component of the presentation will aim to showcase the process of developing terminological/phraseological databases of legal vocabulary, and it will examine specialized phrases from the Mexican Civil Law and possible translations, through practical problem-solving exercises.

Instructors’ Bios

Raul C. Sabado, Esq.

Prof. Raul C. Sabado is the senior partner at the Law Offices of Sabado & Associates in Claremont, California.  Sabado & Associates handles cases in the areas of family law, criminal defense, and estate planning. 

Prior to establishing the firm, Prof. Sabado served as a trial attorney for the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office for seven years.  At the Public Defender’s Office he has defended accused clients in cases as simple as traffic violations to those facing multiple life sentences. Before working at the Public Defender’s Office, he was an associate attorney at the Pasadena Law Offices of Guerrero & Chan, LLP, where he represented clients in family law and civil litigation cases.  In total, Prof. Sabado has represented nearly ten thousand clients and had tried 50 jury and court trials to verdict.

Prof. Sabado is the President of and serves as an arbitrator for the San Gabriel Valley Lawyer Referral Service.  He teaches as an adjunct member of the faculty at Cal Poly University and the La Verne University College of Law.  At these universities, he teaches courses such as Criminal Justice, The American Judiciary, and Trial Advocacy.

 

Rafael Saldívar Arreola, Ph.D.

Mr. Saldívar was born in Mexicali, México in 1974. He holds a Doctorate Degree in Linguistics (Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro) with studies in education and translation. He is a professor and researcher at UABC (Universidad Autónoma de Baja California)-Mexicali. He is the author of the book “Análisis lexicológico de Baja California”, and several articles in books and journals on lexicology and language variation and change, specifically on the influence of the “Narco” phenomenon in language in Mexico.

Mr. Saldívar teaches Semantics, Cognitive Linguistics and Corpus Linguistics. Currently, he is in charge of a research project to create a representative corpus of the speech of Baja California. He is a member of the SNI (National Researcher System) and he is the Coordinator of Postgraduate Studies and Research at the School of Languages at the UABC.

 

Eleonora Lozano Bachioqui, Ph.D.

She was born in Mexicali, México in 1977. She holds a Doctorate Degree in Linguistics (2015) at Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro, a B.A. in Interpretation (2001) from ISIT (Instituto Superior de Intérpretes y Traductores), and a Master´s degree in Business Administration (2006) from the Universidad Olmeca. She is a professor and researcher at the UABC (Universidad Autónoma de Baja California)-Mexicali.

Ms. Lozano is an A. C. Certified translator-interpreter at the Justice Department of the State of Baja California, and she is a member of the California Court Interpreters Association and the Asociación de Traductores e Intérpretes Profesionales de Baja California. She is the author of several articles on legal phraseology and legal interpretation methodology and interpretation teaching. She currently teaches Interpretation at the UABC and serves as the coordinator of the Master´s Degree in Modern Languages at the School of Languages-UABC-Mexicali.
